Before this unit of study I didn't know very much about the Post-Civil War South. The only things I knew that it was a very tough time for southerners both black and white with the rebuilding of the south and starting a whole new life for the blacks. I knew that Abraham Lincoln was murdered and that Southerners were very angry about losing all their slaves. Something that I knew but still really stuck out to me was how fair the North tried to be even though the South lost the war and probably deserved more punishment. It was smart by the North though to try and keep the country as a whole.
It is very beneficial for people to know and understand the history of the place in which they live because it can effect them. Knowing the history of the place in which someone lives can really show how much everything has changed because they can look around and see how different everything is compared to what it used to be. Also knowing the history can help someone to not make the same mistakes as the people who lived their before. It also makes people appreciate the hard work that the people who lived there before had to do to make the place what it is now.
